There’s a line from a Burt Bacharach song that says, “Knowing when to leave may be the smartest thing that anyone can learn.” Moving on. Is there ever a right time? What I have learned over the years is what I believe to be the right time is revealed to me. I consider the change and then gather evidence. I explore, how will this change affect me emotionally, psychologically and financially? I sit with the feelings. But most importantly, I look for clues. What situations are presenting themselves to me? What are people saying?
I made a big decision a few weeks ago. I decided to stop working as an independent contractor for the consulting firm at which I worked for the past 20 years. Although this position provided me with steady income, I was becoming increasingly frustrated by the work because it impacted my ability to be totally focused on my own practice. Then one day, there were too many problems with the old firm and exciting possibilities with the new. I felt my path was clear.
There’s another line in that Burt Bacharach song, which speaks to me. It says, “Fly while you still have your wings.” My destination is unknown but I got my wings and I am clear it’s time for the journey. Moving on. Is there ever a right time? This time seems right to me.
